I am most proud of starting and sticking with my PhD research. Somedays I wanted to give up, and I am proud that I didn’t It was a tough 4/5 years, however, it was worth it!

I’m really proud that all through my education I was an average student but still managed to complete college, complete my PhD and now I am finishing my first post doc of 3 years. I excelled at applied work, experiments and identifying the tools I needed to complete experiments.

I am proud of the impact that my work has had. I have worked with hardware and software that have been applied to fields like agriculture (flowers and sugar cane crops), dairy industry, security, energy, food and restaurants, and more. And all that has made some things easier and safer for people.

I am proud of the fact that I stuck to being an engineer and following what I really liked working on. A lot of my friends , after completing their engineering degree took a completely different job unrelated to engineering and when I talk to them , they don’t seem to enjoy their work. They want to move to a different field or go back to engineering. Although, not impossible but it is very difficult now.
I had an option to go into different fields or jobs other than engineering but I knew that I would not like working in those jobs. That’s why after my Bachelors I stuck to what I loved to do and found the job that I actually like. And I am proud of the fact that I stuck to it and I am happy in my professional life.

I think it would be 4 years ago when I first started working in my current lab. It was the first job I had in my field after college, and it involved passing interview and accepting the job, buying my first car, moving across the country, finding somewhere to live and starting to work in a place where everyone and everything was pretty new to me – all in the space of 2 weeks! It might not sound like a big deal to others, but as I lived at home while I went to college, it was a big change for me. I applied for the job on a bit of a whim as well, so I had never put much thought into moving away at all – I was just suddenly somewhere new. But it has worked out pretty great so far 🙂

I am proud of my dedication not only when I do experiments but even when I make a cake (which can be considered as an experiment as well :D). Even if sometimes I do not get the “cake” I had planned, at least I can say that I tried my best!

Hi Terrance, my biggest achievement in my career so far and the thing that I am most proud of is having the results from my science experiments published on Google Scholar. It’s very cool to go online and type your name in the search bar and have your name appear!

I’m most proud of passing my driving test! I failed it 4 times so when I eventually passed, I was very happy. It’s hard to fail so many times and stick with it, so I’m proud that I did.

I won a teaching award last year which was really nice- teachers/lecturers work hard to ensure that students learn and enjoy attending class, so it was lovely to get some recognition of that!

I am most proud of being involved in I-LOFAR (Low Frequency Array) radio telescope construction. During the summer of 2017 I helped build Irelands first radio telescope called I-LOFAR, once completed I carried out my BSc thesis using I-LOFAR to observe a supernova remnant, radio galaxy, and a black hole.

The thing that I am most proud of is that I continue to learn about myself and develop my likes and interests. When I was in school I thought I would become a science teacher. I went to college to study science. While in college I learnt that I love to teach children of all ages, especially in national school. I also learnt that I liked different parts of science. I learnt that I would like to teach science to children but not in a school setting. I now have a job where I work with science and get to work with children outside of a classroom and help them learn how exciting science can be.

I once emailed a professor in palaeontology to ask if they had any available summer internships. Shortly after sending the email I looked down and saw that he was the author of a palaeontology textbook I had…! I had no idea how famous he was when I contacted him so I am so proud that my fear didn’t stop me from responding to his email and partaking in his internship program.

Hi Terrace,

I am proud to be an engineer and to be living in Ireland. I got a job here after I finished University in Colombia. And I have to say I don’t regret moving out so young, I am learning loads living away from my family – I missed them loads. But this has helped me mature and it has given me the opportunity to live completely new experiences – such as adapting to a new culture and language. It is a life-changing experience!

Passing my PhD exam. I was nervous about the exam because one of my examiners was an expert on the specific topic I was researching for a few decades and made some of the first discoveries on it. It was great to meet him too.

I’m most proud of getting my PhD! It wasn’t easy… I was originally training to be a Teacher! But I wanted to keep learning chemistry too, so I applied for a position at Tyndall. After a year working there, I got offered a PhD position and I couldn’t be happier. Sometimes, you have to follow your dreams!

I haven’t invented something huge so that I can be proud of. But as a computer scientist I am very happy and proud that so far there hasn’t been a programming language I couldn’t work with 🙂 I have written code in basic, visual basic (from 95 to .NET), c/c++, python 2 / 3, lua, java, javascript, php, lua, … 🙂 and to be honest, learning how these work is something I really like 🙂

I suppose overall, I am most proud of being accepted to do a PhD! I was never very sure I would get this far. So here’s to hoping I complete it now! Then I’ll be proud for sticking with it 🙂

Hi Terrance,
I am most proud of leaving a job I disliked and returning to college as a mature student to finish my degree. I then went on to land a good job which I enjoyed and worked in for a few years, I moved companies and now have a great job where I am learning all the time. It’s like all the good parts of school and college but without the exams.
