My favourite place is probably La Silla Observatory in Chile for work. The reason it’s my favourite is because of how relaxing it can be to work there. Normally, I’ll be there for 2 weeks at a time. During that time, I can go for walks during the day where there’s no one else around for miles, and the silence can be quite soothing. At night, the skies are usually crystal clear, giving this amazing view of our Galaxy. Couple this with the fact that I only come across 5-10 other people every day, and there is no pressure to be anywhere else (once the bus drops you off, there’s no leaving until it comes to pick you back up), it allows me to work when I need to in a very quiet environment, but also to completely switch off and appreciate our place in the Universe.

It’s really difficult to choose from! I like visiting places that I used to live to see how they changed and they also bring back many nice memories, so Japan, Denmark and Italy are on that list. There are also a few that I would gladly return for another holiday, like Iceland and Portugal.

I visited Ethiopia a couple of years ago, it is a fabulous country with lovely customs and foods. We saw a lot of rural Ethiopia, it is such a large country but sparsely populated in the country side. There are a lot of different tribes and cultures in different areas and we got to see how people live day to day. The rural communities feel their heritage and traditions very strongly and wish to keep them alive. It is very interesting to see where a river is running dry, there will be parts that there is little or no water flowing as there has been no rain. You can see the river bed which looks like a massive trench but because there is no rain outside the rainy season there are no plants or anything that looks like a river bank- very different to Ireland and Britain. It is very warm in Ethiopia and I was fascinated at how people that live in these climates can tolerate the intense heat and sun. Every body we met seemed to be happy.

California academy of sciences in San Francisco is my favourite place so far. I’d highly recommend the planetarium in there.

One summer I went travelling around Thailand and that was my favourite holiday ever. I had never travelled outside Europe before going. Their culture is so different to European culture and it was so exciting to experience so many new things like food, religion, architecture, wildlife. There are lots of elephants in Thailand. I got to spend two days in a national park where the people who work there care for elephants and are passionate about conservation. Each elephant has a ‘mahout’ which is a very personal keeper that communicates with the elephant. An interesting fact we learnt is that Asian elephants don’t have tusks and African elephants do! This along with the shape of their ears helps you to tell the difference between the two different types. I also saw lots of different temples and went to food and crafts markets and beautiful island beaches! I’d go back in a heartbeat 🙂

The Rhine Westphalia region of Germany I love so much and have been there a lot over the past few years to do research. The wine is so nice there and not to mention the Nuerburgring, it’s only €25 to drive your own car around the track!
